About 1 in 8 US women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the US, along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
October is National Breast Cancer awareness month, and we at Summit Medicine and Pediatrics take the opportunity to educate and empower women to identify as early as possible and fight the disease when it occurs. We encourage women to perform monthly self breast examinations, and to obtain routine screening mammograms on an annual basis, beginning at the at the appropriate age.
