Arizona Coronavirus (COVID-19) Weekly Update: March 21, 2020

Summit Medicine and Pediatrics is tracking the spread of COVID-19 in Arizona. The rate of rise of confirmed cases is EXTREMELY HIGH and risk for community spread in Arizona is MODERATE.


On 11 March 2020, Arizona Gov. Dou Ducey (R) declared a State of Emergency: Office of the Governor: Doug Ducey

While our state is not currently facing the number of cases we’ve seen in some other states, we are anticipating additional positive cases — and we’re not taking any chances. To date, the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine reports that there have been 108 confirmed cases of COVID-19 throughout the State of Arizona (up from 9 confirmed cases 1 week ago). This is a 1,100% increase in weekly confirmed cases, or a 157% average daily rise in confirmed cases over the last week. In comparison, there have been 24,148 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States (up from 2,174 confirmed cases 1 week ago). This is a 1,011% increase in weekly confirmed cases, or a 144%  average daily rise in confirmed cases over the last week. The rate of rise of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Arizona EXCEEDS the national average.

There has been 1 recorded death in Arizona due to COVID-19, the first identified in the State of Arizona (up from no deaths 1 week ago). In comparison, there have been 285 deaths due to COVID-19 in the United States (up from 47 deaths one week ago). this is a 506% increase in deaths, or a 72% average daily rise in deaths over the last week.

To date, the Arizona Department of Health reports that there have been 104 confirmed cases of COVID-19 throughout the State of Arizona (up from 12 confirmed cases 1 week ago). This is a 767% increase in weekly confirmed cases, or a 110% average daily rise in confirmed cases over the last week. There have been a total of 394 tests performed for COVID-19, up from 183 tests last week. This is a 115% increase in weekly tests performed, or a 16% average daily rise in tests performed. There has been 1 reported fatality due to COVID-19 in the State of Arizona.
